This is an excellent site, reachable by car. From NM 550 (formerly NM 44) there is a gravel road about 0.2 miles on the northbound side of milepost 104 at 36.237N, 106.5791W. This is between Lybrook and the Escrito trading post. 550 Runs east-west here, so you will actually turn south on the gravel road. That gravel road is in good shape and will take you all the way to the top of the mesa where there are several communications towers, including an FAA installation. There isn't much room to set up there, so take a dirt road slightly before you get to the top at 36.2138N, 107.5631W. The road is passable by car, but it has some ruts in it. It might be muddy if it has rained recently. Take this road about 0.1 to 0.2 miles, where you will be in a clearing that has some old tanks in it. There used to be an oil well here I think. This is the operating site. It has excellent site lines in all directions as it is about 500 ft above average terrain. I have worked McAlister, NM from here, a distance of 240 miles easily on both 6M and 2M. Albuquerque is nearly line site at 75 miles or so. DM66 usually has no activity in the VHF contest, so you will be popular.

Map with range rings

Map courtesy of AZ_PROJ by NA3T and NV3Z. (Each ring is 50 mi or 80 km apart.)

Maps will take from 30 sec - 5 mins on an unloaded server, depending on the amount of information plotted. Microsoft IE may time out after 3 mins.

Magnetic Declination (Variation)

Magnetic Declination, sometimes called Variation (especially in the aircraft world), is the difference between True North and Magnetic North. It is expressed in the number of degrees difference between the two directions and on which side of True North you will find Magnetic North.

(Declination was calculated on the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center web page at http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomagmodels/Declination.jsp)
